Its bee a while since I have updated this blog.
As I have mentioned to my latest entry, someone is already taking care of this project and I am overjoyed to announce that we have

PENETRATED THAILAND MARKET!!!

We have our very first Thai employee helping us learn, absorb and adapt their culture.
Ecstatic on how the development of a focused marketing campaign. Hats off to the execution of a detailed and direct promotional strategies.

It surely is a great surprise! After the turnover, I never thought that it would advance this fast. In less than a year, we are able to enter the market. Our initial plan was just to participate in a small city but now we are in "The City," Bangkok!!! We first planned to make it available in a certain area, but now we are starting to distribute to the whole country.

I parted ways with project Thailand, but I discovered I never really left it behind. From properly turning it over, giving list of ideal nationwide distributors to connecting one great friend who supported us achieve where we are now, I am astoundingly grateful of still being involved with this and most specially having been able to give out effective and useful contributions.

Nobody wins in this situation; for me both side losses because nothing is gained. What a crappy situation!

Our agenda today was simple. Release the stocks in the fastest way possible. We are hoping it to be released as samlpes, since we are in the process of formalizing things. This is what we are hoping for.

From the place I am staying, its a 15 km drive to Phuket Town where we consulted the provincial FDA of our predicament. Its a good thing that Giovanni and Suwana are both there assisting me. Suwanna do most of the talking since the guy conversed in Thai and giovannis followed up with questions. I cant really follow w\the converstation since everythings is fast and in Thai language. The FDa guy was very straight forward to us; register the product first and better to take it to Bangkok wherein the process is faster rather than in Phuket.

We are already aware of it already so we moved along. Our next stop should have been the airport customs. Since we would most probably be arriving around lunch time, they suggeted in having lunch somwhere first than taking lunch at the airport which is very expensive. They brought me to "Super Cheap," a whoesaler customer/client of them. The place introduces all kinds of products ranging from appliances, gardening to personal care which can be bought at a very cheap price. The place is humid with lots of electric fans trying to make good ventilation. People who normally buy here are store owners whom we define as Mom and Pop owners from the different corners of Phuket Province. Its a supermarket, grocery and pharmacy in one but Thai style. Bare designs; the ceiling of galvanized steel sheets and walls made out of simple wood. Thats "Super Cheap." Eventhough the place is not a convenient place to buy, there were a lot of people there. With that kind of atmosphere, I thought teh process would have been chaotic. But I was surprised. It was properly managed. As you exit, all of your goods will be checked based on the receipt paid. Add to that, they use bar codes and computers for the cashiers. Tehy have a great sytem just that they took away the aesthetic designs and minimized other fixed expenses to maintain this low price they offer.

We had lunch then at Laeng Hin. Or it sounded like that. Restaurant by the bay which serves fresh seafoods. All the dishes that they ordered were new to me. And I am very excited to try them all: Shrimps with some kind of leaves that are fried together to a crisp which looks like criss-cut fries. Raw shrimps with a dip of spicy sweet sauce. Smoked fish to perfection. Spicy curry thai style. Eat all you can rice. Fruits. And beer as our beverage. Suwana though had fresh coconut since she is pregnant. Did I forget something? Well, to sum it all up, it was a superb lunch.

After that fantastic meal, we headed straight forth the customs at the airport in Phuket. It was a 45minute drive. I met again my agent and both Giovanni and Suwana helped me in questioning the agent. We are told of the scenarios we could partake and was even given actual computations for duties and possible expenses. I have learned a lot in importing goods and starting a company. That day confirmed everything I knew.

We had two choices. But the most deal and best (if you ask me) is going to Bangkok. It was clear to me that Bangkok is the key in everything here in Thailand.

That afternoon, they showed me the shops in Patong wherein their product ZigZag is available. They were available in pharmacies eventhough the law here discourages selling of tobaccos and cigarettes. if you come to visit stores, you wont find any visible cigarettes for sale. you have to inquire for it before they show and give them to you. Its a stict practice here in Thailand and am very surprised on how retailers practice them deliberately.

We had italian ice cream at Re Gelato and espresso in Coffee Lovers as we discuss the possible scenarios of our partnership. I really appreciate their honesty. I know only few who have the guts to tell about their company. And to think the many days they spent helping me out, meeting me, learning and creating scenarios with them, makes me think how serious they are in takng in Beach Hut.

To cover much more space and reach my destinations, I rented a motorbike since last week. The challenges as a first time rider:

1. Riding it - its my first time

2. Familiarize the places

3. Prevent from getting caught

4. Park it somewhere, and try finding it again

Last night, Giovanni and I had dinner at Kims in Kalim Beach. We had crabs salad for starters, fish in lemon juice and beef curry for the main course. Teh food was prepared and presented in a unique way. The food was excellent. Its a great place to dine at for privacy.

Its an exhilirating moment for me as we discussed still further making our partnership to become into a reality. At that moment, we have opend up our assets in doing business and exchanged information which would help to make progress.

I have laid out the plan already. By now, I believe he realizes how assured we are to be part of Thailand consumers.

Giovanni set forth his inquiry in importing goods. I called up Bangkok more about the necessary prices and requirements in partaking the FDA approval of Beach Hut. We are both moving on the same direction.

In Giovanni, I find his excitement at the same level with mine.

Today, I am very positive on things. My options are now laid out after 5 weeks of networking, procedures and processes are getiing clearer. I was given 8 options of possible interested distributor of Beach Hut from Kenneth. Although, all of them are in Bangkok, I have to be there at one point in time for documentation.

Now I have to settle and make things easier to work with SKGF. Although I thought it would be as simple as saying it, it seems to me that it would take another meeting to counter his proposal. Lets just say that with the terms they are offering, it will not be feasible for us to start it. It was nice to meet both Giovanni and Suwanna. This possible partnership would take a little longer than I expected.

Tomorrow, I am to present a counter proposal to them and hopefully I would be able to end this over the weekend, as I should go to Bangkok as soon as possible.

I am very grateful today as one of companies based here in Phuket found interest in Beach Hut's distribution; He was even able to meet with me within hours. It was a very fruitful conversation we had, if only i dont have a scheduled meeting at that moment, I would have spent more time wiht Giovanni and learn more about his company.

It was one of the best short and informative meetings I ever had. He have shared his capabilities as a distributor wherein which I am searching for. Their company's practices were a different one and his idea of promotion/s were the same with us, which is direct and at minimal cost.

That night i went to Karon to meet Peter. He have two shops he is interested in selling Beach Hut.

That night I roamed around Karon and Kata Beach. It was serene and peaceful unlike Patong Beach. I loved the atmosphere. I am felling differently now.

The search continues...my tele-marketing skills are being challenged right now. But I know some way or another, I will end up with something. Fortunately for me, a retailer in Karon Beach was interested with Beach Hut. Its another start. We scheduled our meeting tomorrow and finalize the venue when we are to meet up. He is in KRABI for a vacation (I wonder how the place looks like...and also how he is enjoying it).

I have lot of rejections that day. The worst statement I have ever heard was "We dont work with tourists." What he meant was foreigners. Its a reaction and statement about how Thais, espescially businessmen, are not open with free trade. But what was surprising with this particular company was he thought I was looking for a manufacturer for our product. The reason he entertained me. Now that was funny.

What are the usual lines they tell me?
- "no english"
- "no understand"
- " boss Malaysia. phone again" , now this statement took me 5 minutes before I understood her.
- "product not same", not same line of product they are carrying

Oh well, i was just fortunate enough when I have received another list refered by a friend I have met 2weeks ago. He gave me a list of possible importers and distributors for Beach Hut which I am thankful for. And again this made me re-think because the list were all located in Bangkok. Now this is a really pressing me hard to consider again... time is not on my side.

The turnout with the distributor whom I met yeterday wasnt how I expected it to be. I was thinking about how our conversations were taking place and felt I wasnt feeling good about it. She is not whom we need to do business with. Her ideas are copies from foreign brands, even the way it is packaged. So, today I search for other possible options.

I am left with the list of Phuket based companies I was able to download, thanks to google. All day long, I have to get in touch with the owners/presidents from the list. I have 11 prospects from the 15; 2 sounds like bakeries distributing breads, 1 i already have met yesterday and 1 which has the name of one of our competitors here.

I felt like a tele-marketer selling a product,hoping to get them interested with Beach Hut. I have prepared my script long before comprised of just 2 sentences. Back in the Philippines, I would have sold to all retail shops tasked to me, but now, the challenge is to find the right distributor and most importantly find someone within their company who could understand what I was trying to say; language barrier gives me a lot of headaches.

My office place? Robinsons in Phuket Town at the phone booth. i have to change my bills into coins to make the possible calls. Its the cheapest way which serves my purpose. The whole afternoon was very tasking, trying to find the simpliest and basic word for them to understand.

I went to a forwarding agents office, SkyTrade to follow-up on our shipments and I was informed that there are documents needed wherein which they cant proccess for us. I was advised (same advise I had before by a different company)to process it in Bangkok.

Now with the challenges I am facing, I have to think about how to deal with the situation. I have prospects here in Phuket but I have to go to Bangkok. Both are important matters that I have to attend to but I have drop one.

I have a shipment for me to look after today. Although it was supposed to have arrived at my doorstep way back, it shouldnt be a worry to get them. It was a 45minutes at a speed of 90kms/hr to the airport to meet with Mr. Pitak. As soon as I have arrived there, he referred to me to 3 agents who could help me with the shipment.

Unfortunately, there was no clearance of the declared product since the product was not registered in Thailand. The 2 agencies can only suggest for me to go back to Bangkok and apply the proper registration in FDA for us to be issued an importation permit. And such permits before being imported to Thaialand, needs requests first before shippping it out. The last agency informed me of other things that could be done. I am looking forward of it.

Another lesson/s learned (for us). We should have been aware of this. I should never have assumed that those shipments would be delivered to my place, in front of my door. I should never have assumed that service would be the same in The Philippines. i forgot that I was in Thailand. Now the shipment is costing us just because I wasnt able to find an interested importer.

Speaking of importers, I met with Khun Varaporn this afternoon for possible distribution of Beach Hut in Phuket. She has 300 retail outlets (pharmacies, etc.) of her product TonTree an after sun lotion. She was surprised that an foreign product would still want to compete in Tahiland since there are already ltos of players. around.

Our 2 hours meeting was long and a bit brutal for me. We were both having difficulty hearing out each other, which meant some words are hard to decipher. Everything should be explained in the simpliest word, the basic. Well, I was surprised at her quick interest in partnering with us. She is pulling my leg. She wanted me to bring her line of lotion after sun products and her other upcoming products this year to Philippines.

Well, I got a word form her that she will be ordering from me for all her retail shops. She cant commit and only on October becasue the season starts at that time of the year. She wanted me to come back on September the trial of distributing Beach Hut.

Well, it was not waht I was hoping for, but should be ample for now. Its a good thing that I was able to back track last Sunday and was able to research on TonTree. I found a list of distributors here in Phuket. Now I hope at least one item in the list distributes consumer products like TonTree.

My meeting ended around 7pm that night. And since I am still not familiar with the places I have been, as usual, i would call my friend over the mobile and make him explain to the motorbike rider where I am going. This is the quickest and surest way in getting to meet people.

Oh well, tomorrow another hunting game for me.

Busmates of mytravel back to Phuket

I had a bargain. Along Khaosan Road, you can ride a bus going to Phuket for a mere 450baht. To save money, most tourist take this ride going to the South of Bangkok.

A few minutes past 6pm we rode a 30 seater bus. For 40 minutes, we stopped 12 midnight for dinner at the place shown above. I cant help myself capturing this moment seeing hungry tourists eat at a place like "turo-turo" in the Philippines. Before 1am, we traveled again south to change buses by 6am. 6am we have diffrent buses to ride depending on the point of destination each of us is heading for. 630am ride a mini truck/jeep to a bus going to Phuket. Around 12noon, we arrived in Phuket Town bus station.

During the idle time of changing buses, Hank of Holland, Molly of Hawaii, Ed of Ireland and I had a few laughs on our bus experience.

- Hank stands at around 6"2' (or even taller) is fortunate to have a good legroom. Its like a VIP seat for him with that long legs of his.
- Leg Room is just enough for 5"7' people and below. you cant stretch it any further
- The first 6 hours without eat would reall make you hungry. And you dont have a good selection of food.
- We were just sleeping when the bus was stopped to kick us out
- We felt we were kicked out of the bus one time, as they did not explain in detail that its time to change buses.
- Molly lost his luggage in the airport
- Hank had a miserable time in Bangkok due to traffic

Ed and I dont mind whats happening. As we all agreed, we cant expect much with the price we have paid for. We got the ride for a cheap price and we never really expected an excellent service!

My objective today is to get to the airport as soon as possible to find the shipments sent for me. As soon as I arrive in Phuket, travelled an hour in a motorbike to Patong Beach for the free 7 days stay at my previous place in VISES Hotel. I took a quick shower and headed forth Phuket Airport for the shipment. Before 4pm, am already at the airport and unfortunately the airlines I was supposed to look for is in Bangkok.

We are currently experiencing difficulty in transfering information. Now I am sent back to my place and will wait for any further information from them.

Now I can have a good rest!

I woke up not feeling well. I feel like getting sick so I opted to sleep longer and rest well for my meeting later. As I woke up, I still feel funny. I dont have the appetite to eat. I have butterflies in my stomach. I am nervous thinking about my meeting later with IDS.

I was an hour early for a meeting. Mr. Bruce Hemmingsen travelled from the province just to meet with me. It was privilege to meet and have a chat with him. He was just a concerned on the small scale strategy we wanted Beach Hut for distribution. I mentioned him that its a start but we aim to be widely distributed in ASIA. He asked me tell my boss to get in touch with him.

From hereon, I am looking forward for a partnership with them! I got so excited that I immediately reported this to Manila.

Another UP!- that night I met Flip and he introduced me to Hok and Jessie. Both owns a website which sells a lot of stuff. A possible partner in e-commerce. They are willing to look for me that particular distributor they see which carries a lot of products. I was glad to meet as they shared a lot of things about Thai culture which I really need to learn.

Sawat Dee Khrap/Ka is never used much anymore. They have a slang for it or cut it short when they pronounce it. Its old school using that phrase or either "you learned that in Thai Bars." I wish I can spend time with them again.

I woke up early today. 6am I traveled back to Khaosan Road and search for a daily rate place, took a bath, dressed up and travel again for my meeting with BIG C. By 10am I was within the area. (The picture above is the BIG C Supercenter in Ratchadamri Road.) After waiting in line, to my dismay, I was told to re-schedule the meeting and call them again.

Now I have to gather my thoughts. I settled down BIG C Supercenter's food plaza and sked for a schedule with them. I also did a lot of thinking if I missed out something. And I remembered that I was not able to get in touch with IDS so I gave them a call. I was a ble to reach Khun Nuch secretary of IDS Managing Director. It was a different situation selling a product by phone. Its a good thing that I was able to create a simple script that will only take a few seconds explaining the product.

Upon explaining the product to her, I was asked for any materials that would support the claim I was telling her. Instead of faxing the usual proposal I mentioned her to visit www.lotionsucks.com to have a better grasp of the product. She hanged up and told me that she will get back to me within the day. After that, I travelled forth in search of Watsons which is located at Klong-Teoy, Bangkok. It took me 3 hours to find the place and left the proposal with their purchasing head and was asked to get back to them after a weeks time.

I have my ups and downs that day. The DOWNS!- The re-scheduling of my meeting with BIG C, follow up meeting with WATSONS. Add to that I was called by Khun Thu and Khun Uiy, friends of Tita Tessie (friend of Tita Ian, Autnie of my brother-in-law. What a network!) regarding Diethelm Distribution, that they cant carry Beahc Hut since htey are already carrying a competitor with them.

My UP! - Khun Nuch called back and wanted an immediate appointment with her boss and me at Sheraton Grande Hotel in Central Bangkok. He will be traveling form the province to meet me. Now that is really great news!

From my new place, I walk for 5minutes to take a bus in Thamassat University to take van ride going to Bangkok. Its an hour and a half of travel, the sacrifice I have to make in finding a cheap place but a convenient one since I have company who could help me with there.

I went to look for BIG C's main office. I have an address that was given to me in Phuket. The address I have is Rajdamri Road but cant be found in the map. Flip explained to me that there were changes in how Thai streets were spelled nowadays. Rajdamri is Ratchadamri road and I was able to get to the place riding the MRT (subway), BTS (skytrain) and walking to BIG C Supercenter in Ratchadamri Road. I consumed a lot of time locating it and asking for directions within the BIG C SuperCenter. I was passed on form people to people because most of the time I was asking for directions to Thai who cant understand my pronounciation.

Again, my agenda is to walk the front door and ask for a presentation. I did this before with Family Mart last week and went well. Khun Penwipa (Family Mart) was interested to take in the product but they will entertain us only if the product is under a Thai company. I felt the same thing would be requested by BIG C, but then again my purpose of visit is to ask for their referrals of possible distributors for Beach Hut here in Thailand. I was given an appointment for tomorrow.

After that, I went in search for 7eleven. I have with me is their address(in Thai language). With the what I got, i consulted cab drivers and asked them to take me to the place written down. I was surprised that they have no idea where the address is located. So I dropped that strategy since I believe that 7Eleven is just the same with Family Mart who have a centralized distribution of products.

From thereon, I went to DHL to ask the location of the shipment sent to me from Manila. I gave them the House Airway Bill Number and told me that there should only be 10 numbers for them to locate it. I called Mara for the update and later on learned that there was a confusion on information that were sent/given to me.

Due to this, I have to change plans immediately and ride back to Phuket for the shipment. I have to settle my bill with the apartment I just booked, get back to Khaosan Road for a daily rate rental and acquire my leads within a few days before setting forth back to Phuket.

My travel back to my place was not the end of it. After 1.5hours of travel and the whole day searching for places I am not familiar with, that night I have to negotiate for the rented apartment. I did not bother my friends since I know that they were always busy during weekdays. I found it difficult negotiating the 2000baht downpayment I gave with the land lady. I was requesting for a dialy rate since I have to cut short my lodging. The land lady was not going to give me back the money. Its a good thing that a Thai student helped me out epxlaining, interpreting and begging for a cheaper price. We settled for 1000baht for two days. I am very thankful for the Thai student to helped me out.

Its was long and exhausting day for me. And tomorrow is another adventure searching for a new place to stay and searching for a possible carrier of Beach Hut sunblock.

I was introduced to Flip long before I got along with him while I was working at Boracay for Beach Hut. Its a small world. I never realized I would meet him him again. That Saturday night, we had a few beers at his place and got to know more about Thailand. One of these days, he will also introduce me to his Thai friend who is starting a business thru internet.

Muhi, the Indonesian, told me there are a lot of similarities with Indonesians and Filipinos. The language is almost the same. Like shoes, they call it "sapato." Tomorrow, he will accomodate me in renting a room near his place.

I have decided to find for another place to stay. The room I have rented at Khaosan is cheap for its price but not the room I needed. It was next to a bar restaurant which plays very loud music until 3am. Add to that, there are no sockets for me to charge my gadgets inside the room. I have to go down and charge it in the locker room of the front desk. For my mobile phone its okay, but for my laptop I cant risk it.

There were no more places within the area that would fit my budget, so i called Flip and asked for his help. Coincidentally, flip and his friend Muhi are looking for cheap apartments too that day. So, i met them that afternoon near Chatuchak Park.

I went along with them searching for a divider for Flips apartment. Chatuchack market is a huge place. They sell lots of things from shirts, accessories, collectibles to house furnishings. We have seen only a part of the place for 2hours. I was told that we won't be able to see the entire place for a day.

During the search, Muhi and Flip told me about the apartments they have seen near Victory Monument. It is a strategic location since its very near teh BTS or Sky Train. But I told them that I would prefer a place near them. They reside near Thammasat University, outside of Bangkok. Although the place is a far from Bangkok, it would be easier for me if I can can get in touch with them quickly. Mostly for translations and directions to places I need to present Beach Hut.

That night,w e just hanged out sharing stories and a few laughs. Both are a great company to be with. Very helpful.

Tomorrow, I will travel to Thammasat University for a 4,000baht monthly rent. And Muhi is willing to travel with me and show the place.

Computer Rentals

Have your bills change into 10baht coins and you can rent this computer for 15minutes. A cheap computer rental but you have to be sure to have ready coins with you. The monitor automatically shuts off when the time expires.

Since there are no wifi connecitons withing the area, I usually rent this computer. It the cheapest I can find in Khaosan Road.

A backpackers place, Khaosan Road are for tourists with tight budget. You can get cheap rooms from 250-500baht per night. Vegetable Pad Thai for only 20baht. Fresh fruits for 10baht. Fried Rice with vegetables and egg for 20baht. Around 4 24hours convenience store along this street. You'll reach McDonalds, Subway and Starbucks in a minute.

There is a lot of things you can do just along this street. Shop for a cheap shirt. Dare yourself with fried Scorpions, cockroaches, leeches and worms. Meet friends from around the world. Try their Club. Listen to live bands playing. Everythign is open until 2am in the morning.

Its a great place for a day or two of vacation. But at the moment, its not for me. Whenever I arrive here after roaming the streets of Bangkok,searching for partneres, all I wanted to do is rest. With the loud noise going on (my place is right beside a bar) i seldomly have a good nights sleep for 3 days. I guess I have to leave this place. But surely I will be back for a vacation.

Map Reading!

I am on my own in an unfamiliar territory. I bought a map to guide of my whereabouts here in Bangkok. I pursued looking for Boots Pharmacy's head office here. With a map, I know that I can easily find the address.

I followed the instructions of the Land Lady gave me in getting there... I asked every person along the street but to my dismay i cant seem to get to the place with the address I am searching for. Until I asked an attendant of a particular hotel, and my oh my, he speaks well in english. He knew exactly the building and showed me the way.

My objective was to walk the front door, look for the buyer/purchser in charge, present the product and finally they would be able to introduce me to a prospective distributor. Well, everything didnt work according to plan. I was simply told to email her the proposal and wait for their reply. What a waste of time!

I searched for 7Eleven next and since it was already 3pm, i opted to ride a cab again to get there. The address is in Thai language so I cant understand and let the cab read and get me there. I was very unlucky! Even the cab drivers doesnt know where it is in Bangkok. I walked around and hailed more cabs but still to no avail. I feel like I have bad luck with me.

Well, its dark already and started raining. I was surprised to see a subway which also leads to the skytrain. I tried that route on my way back home. Yes, the picture attached is how the the subway looks like. Very spacious adn comfortable to ride.

I set forth to Bangkok!!!

I took the VIP24 bus from Phuket to Bangkok. The travel time is approximately 12hours covering 860kms of distance. We only had one stop for a break and eat at Chompon. Its a good thing that the bus have a toilet inside. Taking a leak wasnt a problem.

As soon as I arrive, I went to Khaosan Road (backpackers place) for a room to rent. Left my backpacks and met Tita Ian and her friend Tita Tessie. Both are very good singers of prestigious hotels here in Bangkok. They encouraged me to join them and maybe some of their friends can help me in my search. And fortunately we met Khun Thu & Khun Uiy at CheeseCake Restaurant ner Ekemai Road.
Khun Thu and Khun Uiy are very kind for spendiong sometime with us during their vacation with their family. They are to refer to me to a good friend of theirs who works at Diethelm, a consumer products distributor. I really appreciate the help they extended and the time they spent to hear me out. Now I just have to wait for their friends call within this week.

That night too, they brought me along with them having a dinner in ChineChine Restaurant. It was farewell treat by Khun Chit for Tita Ian. We had chinese food (and how I miss it). We had some chats and and singing and I had a talk with a friend of them (sorry I forgot your name sir) that Diethelm and IDS are the top disti\ributors in ASIA. I should give it a shot to contact them for my product.

Well, I had a great welcoming treat from Tita Ian, Tita Tessie and friends (espescially Chit). So as the night passes by, I sang songs for their entertainment while they ctach up on things.

Tomorrow is the official start of my search in Bangkok!

Pressure!!!!

Thats how I am feeling right now. I have traversed the whole area, met new friends and acquaintances, searched every corner of possibility here in Phuket, and yet am still where I started....still serching.

Pressure can make a ball burst. Now I dont want that to happen. Its a good thing that I am still here, alive. Got to think more deeply now...ponder on things...and device a new and different strategy.

I just watched the beach and let my thoughts ponder and reflect. Where and when will I ever find a distributor to present at? Where will I find that particular friend to introduce me?

Am all maxed out. I have talked to almost all of the pharmacies here in Patong beach for the nth time and still to no avail. It would have been the best distribution for the beach since these retail shops are everywhere. “Slow business. Get back to us when its in season. We will purchase one. We stiall have a lot of sunblocks in stock.” I don’t know if its really wrong timing, but Thai owners of pharmacies there are not in favor of trying it our. I just wish that they could have shared to me their contacts of distributors. That would have been a big help.

Add to my ill-fated day, my appointment with Holiday Inn at Patong was moved until I was able to show them a license “Authorized to sell in Thailand.” Helen broke this sad news, “Reproduce the license just like San Miguel has to distribute product/s.” I am not aware of this and that’s another lesson that has to be charged to experience. Holiday Inn is a global company, who practices good business in a procedural way.

That night, my new friend Lyn, the lawyer, called me and mentioned that she was trying to check if Beach Hut will pass the government approval in selling the product. If there will be no restrictions on the ingredients it has. She will confirm this to me as soon as she heard news about it. Also she mentioned me about offering her services on the trademark application of it. I was really glad that she is helping us out here. Some things that we might have missed up.

With what had happened this week, I have another option to walk the front doors of the 3 most biggest supermarkets in Phuket (which I was told have chains in Thailand). These are Big Sea, Lotus and Central Festival. This would be my agenda before the week ends. I wish myself goodluck!

I believe in the law of averages. I will close a distributorship for Beach Hut after many trials. This is what I am banking on! I am learning...I hope its just faster.

YELLOW

Mondays and Fridays are yellow days! Thais wear yellow shirts to honor thier King. 5 customers of this bank wears it. All the staff are dressed in yellow. And even the vendors are wearing them. I was surprised I was wearing a yellow polo that day too!

Was it mere circumstancial? It was my first time to wear that yellow polo shirt in Thailand. And I am glad I was wearing it that day.

After several trials of communicating with the frontliners of Big 1 One,now iIn my hand is the address of Ocean Plaza’s Head Office. Thanks to the very accommodating employee of BIG 1 ONE! He is very patient with me. With this I instantly decided to walk the front door and present the product am carrying. I had a bus ride to Phuket Town and from there took a motorbike ride up to their main office. Total travel time would have been an hour, 30minutes on bus and another 30mins on the motorbike. That’s how far the place was.

Upon entering the front door, I found shoes lined up outside. So, I slid off my shoes and entered the office as I believe is their custom. The front desk smiled and greeted me. As usual I would greet them back and tell them that I don’t speak Thai. She doesn’t even speak English well, and pulled out 3 more to try and understand my purpose of visit.

I figured that basic English is necessary. Better to say bring to stores rather than distribute. But even with basic English I still have difficulties explaining them my purpose. It could have been my intonation that makes it difficult for them to understand. Without sign language, I don’t know how else to tell them my purpose. It felt like I am playing charades, but this time around you can say the words while acting it out. In a gist, I was asked to go back with a sticker at the back of the package in Thai language. I would have learned a lot in that meeting if I only understood every word that they say; why they are requiring me for such. I cant help but be angry of myself.

Language barrier my worst enemy right now!

Met with Ruel in the afternoon and introduced me to a Filipino lawyer working in a law firm at Phuket Town. Lyn, the lawyer accommodated me and even joked that she wont charge me for our 2hours of exchanging ideas. She was glad to meet another Filipino. Although her field of expertise si in Real Estate, she has little knowledge in some areas such as Trademarks and Product Registration procedures. I really appreciated her effort in extending her assistance for free. She promised to get back to me regarding the possible approval of the product for sale.

I am very grateful to all the Filipinos I have met.

Yes! Its Sunday. I cant wait to meet more Filipinos later. Charlita, invited us to her place for some booze and dinner and to our surprise her place was big. No, its gigantic… humongous! We never thought she owns a place this big and extravagant. Her place needs to be facilitated by 21 helpers for here and her 2 daughters. That’s how big the place is.

As my new found friend Ruel shared his story in meeting her, he never thought that a simple lady like her would dance around with the likes of him (or even me). In a gist, Charlita was not a showoff nor doesn’t talk big. All of us were surprised with what we saw. I would say she is has a very kind heart.

It’s a good thing also that I have met Ruel that day. I sense in him that he would be able to help me in a lot of things. He had a lot of bewares and warnings, I guess this shows his camaraderie with Filipinos. Meeting new people and hanging out with them is his fancy. Ditto.

The night was a great time to know more about them and have a great time. After finding a new and cheaper place, stocks to be delivered at, accessible internet access, unsuccessful closing of sales, and now meeting Ruel, I deserve this break. I wish this kind of gathering repeats more often.

How they have stepped up and considered the tragedy they encountered. Just one of the sights that they have securedly build to become one of the tourist spot, again! Everybody's help should be accounted for in making this city anew. How I envy their government and the department of tourism in building this city back on their feet again.

Our country can be at par with Thailand. We also have a lot of tourist spots/destinations to build tourism. I believe the Philippines can...everyone just have to contribute in making. The way the Thais believed in themselves nad making contribtuions to bring back Phuket. Alive and kicking again.

I was told that this site burned down around the day I arrived here in Phuket. So, thats 2 weeks ago. Its a tragic thing to happen. Most passersby will stopby and look for a while to ponder. I myself thought of this unfortunate event and the time the tsunami consumed the whole Phuket.

After a while, I looked around. This is the only sorry sight you will ever find here in Phuket. Teh Land of Smile is very much SMILING now. Everyone bounced back from the disaster. I dont see any place that is destroyed. The owners will bounce back, as we normally do.

Visit Phuket and you will be surprised...never thought that a disaster once occured in this place.

Thai women work as hard

This sight is very humbling for me. A thai woman, carrying her load of goods for sale on her shoulders. How she strives to sell her goods..straining both her physical might and mental tensions. Mentally because she have to communicate with all of us foreigners in selling her goods.

This struck me when I saw her. I am in the same predicament of finding retailers and distributors of our sunblock product. I have to be mentally tough in trying to communicate and understand the negotiations in making a sale in a foreign country, with unfamiliar cultures and languages I am still to comprehend.

It was very exhilarating to find "kababayans" in this district of Phuket. I never thought that I would be able to meet and talk to my fellow countrymen in this tourist spot. This confirms how great filipinos are in entertaining people.

Tita Lily, Michael, tin-tin, Noel, Lando, Manong Ed and those whom I cant remember your names, you know who you are, all of you were great. I had a great time with you that evening. The way you made those foreigners dance and really have the time in their life having a great vacation here in Patong Phuket, Thailand. you all make us proud. You guys really know how to have a good time despite the years you've been out of the country. Come this Sunday during your restdays, i will be honored to be with you guys and have a tour in Phuket or whatever your plans may be.

They even introduced me to their Thai freind Ik who is a lawyer. He is also very interested in Beach Hut. I hope everything will be fruitful after this.

It was a terrible day for me. This is my room; my place of solitude right now; my place for relaxation. I really need to rest.

I shouldnt have walked the whole Patong up until night time. Now I have a sore left foot. Its was aching too much that I cant even walk.. even just by sitting down and writing this blog, my foot really hurts so much that I nearly cried. Well, thats the pain you get, walking for 2.5 hours. I cant help myself and wander around to see the place. To look at possible shops where Beach Hut can be placed and of course, to see the wonders of Phuket, at least Patong Beach first.

No pain no gain. I was able to see the whole Patong Beach. The place is really big and it took me up until this night to be able to witness what the district looks like. And I’ve seen everything just by merely walking. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to carry my camera this that night. My bad. And unfortunately for me, my foot still hurts like hell....so I rested.I know it was stupid of me to view the entire place just by walking. It’s the time you spend to appreciate the view that only by walking you could do. A motorbike would cover the distance faster but it will only give you a glimpse on what to appreciate here. That’s why I opted walking.

Well now I know which to spend time again. And I promise, I will be taking pictures of them. At least now I know where and which places to go. But for now, its time to rest for another day.

Beef Noodles

You wont have a taste of Thailand without trying their noodles. I saw a foreigner trying out this street food so I might as well try it now. I was hungry then too at that time.

The beef noodle was great. The broth used is very much superb from the noodles I had back in the Philippines. The beef was very tender and they have included two balls of pork that looks like egg inside. The noodles was perfectly cooked. Al dente as they say in italian. Its like 'sotanghon' noodles but thicker. Add to that, you get a free fresh vegetables on the side. String beans, bean sprouts and leaves which I dont know where it came from. The vegetables were raw and yet the taste is sweet. Maybe its how they prepare them...they soak them in cold water I think. Well, its a must try. Its very good... something to refresh my day.

Earlier, I was speaking with a thai in this pharmacy. We really had trouble understanding each other. I was very polite and trying very hard understanding what he is saying to me. I know that he was talking to me in English, I can understand some bits and pieces of it. But still, I am having great difficulty deciphering what he is saying to me. His pronunciation of words is different. How different? The number 20 to them sounds seventy to us. What a difficult predicament I was in then. I really wished I know how to speak Thai to be easier for me.

I have finished my noodles when I have thought of the situation. I paid the bill and surprised myself on how we both understood each other just by hand gestures. Sign language is a means of communicating. Maybe when I get back to the pharmacy, he will understand my sign languages…I doubt it. It’s a lot complicated in negotiations.

AUSSIE BAR

As my previous posted picture, WORLD CUP mania is very much alive here. Every single game is being tracked by bars, restaurants and resorts. Game schedules are even posted outside the establishments. Well this shows the much support of Thai in their tourism. Most foreigners here (or "farangs" in Thai) are from the West and very much fans of soccer or futbol. The picture here shows Australians in AUSSIE BAR (at least 98% Australians) watching their country men play against Brazil. Every fumble, every good pass, every fouls committed by either teams, you could hear their different remarks. I feel their intensity too..I myself was a varsity player in this field. And I miss playing the sport watching this game with them.I wont forget this moment. I was watching the game standing along the street beside two bars. I felt like I was in between of two groups of "hooligans" as they call it in Europe (i think); the Brazil fans (previous post) and the Australians here at the Aussie Bar. I was a chilling moment for me. You could hear the remarks of either sides whenever the referee makes a call. You could see hand gestures made towards the other group whenever there was a missed opportunity or a goal was scored. It was a chilling moment and at the same time intimidating. I know that this kind of situations can lead to a brawl. And then Brazil won. Their fans celebrated on the street(see pictures of previous blog). The Australians lost 2-0. Although you can feel the tension between the two groups, luckiliy for me, the clash didnt happen after the game. The Australians were sport. They accepted defeat and let the others celebrate and cheer for their team.It was a kind gesture for the Australians. I'll give them a high five. it was thei 2nd appearance in the World Cup. Teh defeat was nothing to be ashamed of. Being in the World Cup finals is proof enough that they excel too in futbol. Its was a sweet victory to lose to the best team to date. i wont doubt it if Brazil wins the World Cup.Well, how I really miss the playing futbol again...I wished i had the opportunity of playing for my country too. Damn! now I miss watching games with my friends. Oh well...life goes on.

There’s a bunch of them along the streets, especially at night. You could have mistaken them for girls. You’ll have an idea if they are truly gays the way they dress themselves up. Some women won’t even dare to wear the outfit they are dressed in at public places. So if you see a lady wearing an outfit you know your friend won’t wear in public, it’s a huge possibility that she is gay.

Yes, there are a lot of them on the streets. I could even count at around eight of them that I could have mistakenly thought of as beautiful women. So, if you are interested in having a sex change, I will vouch for Thailand’s expertise on this. To see is to believe!!!

BANG LA ROAD

This is BANG LA ROAD. The street is lined with Bars on both sides of it. Its like Nakpil St., Malate in the Philippines. All types of foreigners can be found here enjoying the night with booze. Beers here costs form 50baht to 70baht, not bad for a tourist spot. Most of the bars here doesn’t even have a door. It is open for everyone to see and enjoy the people inside the bars. It is already common in this street to find women dancing on the tables with their skimpy outfits. At least 6 bars along the road have this strategy to attract customers… there may be more in the inner streets. A word of caution for any newbies, be careful and be wary on women you see in this place. They may be KRA-TEOYS; or lady-boys. [if gte vml 1]>

7Eleven!?

What does the color of these stores remind you? Yes, I believe so that these are imitations of the renowned 7Eleven 24hrs convenience stores. I believe that 7Eleven was prominent enough that some would replicate their operations and even replicate their look. I really don’t know why they would prefer on NOT having a unique identity. Well, I guess they just wanted to have a share of the market and not own it. I cant even remember the name of the store…its just the 7Eleven look alike. They are just targeting the limited area that customer’s passes-by. The stores above can change their strategy and maybe be a big time player in Patong Beach. Its alright to be a small. Sometimes small can be BIG. It really depends on what perspective you are looking into. Small getting BIG!? I’ll expound this in some of my blogs. I have to rest for awhile.

New Age TUKTUKs

Am having trouble sleeping at my first night here in Phuket. So I decided to stroll along the area and look for Tuktuks here in Patong Beach. In front of Family Mart, gusy will always get your attention and ask you “Tuktuk?,” simply offering a ride. I was looking for a 3-wheeled vehicle or a tricycle but these are the new Tuktuks, the 4-wheeled mini van or the 2-wheeled motorcycles for a back ride. I guess that Tuktuks nowadays are defined as public transportations.

My friends tell me that riding Tuktuks will give you an adrenaline rush. I’ve seen it pass-by the street and it was not a daring ride. Maybe its different in Bangkok, where most stories told. In Bangkok, drivers were daredevils. They ride at their optimum speed like crazy…I have to ride with them. When I get in Bangkok, I will surely take the dare!

Immigrations

As I got of the bus, I really didn’t know where to go. Bangkok airport is bigger than I am used to back in my country. I was lost in this newness. Luckily I was pointed to the hallway where most people are going. And there it leads me to a line of people…getting past the immigrations, as shown in this picture. I waited for my turn for at least 20 minutes and even had a small talk with some Filipinos working just outside Bangkok.

It was my turn. And I was rejected. I had the right idea of passing the immigrations but the line for Phuket was a 5minute walk from where I am. I looked stupid and bit humiliated for my arrogance. Now I only have 15minutes left before my flight to Phuket leaves. Now I am rushing…

Lesson learned: I felt like an ant back there. I waited in line because everyone was lining up. It’s better to ask around and appear foolish than waste your time at nothing. I think it’s a man thing who would rather read than ask around.

Oh well, it was my first time. Its my excuse! Hehehehhehe! J

Bangkok Shuttle

Whenever your on your own, alone, you cant help yourself to contemplate. Or better yet, there are things that would remind you of what you had back where you came from. Two months alone in a place, unacquainted with (they speak in a different language I am not familiar with) is not that really easy.

The ride was very gentle. The seats were neat, doesn’t smell and very comforting. It reminds me about friendship. Whenever you are with them, you have that feeling of comfort; as friends help each other to get you to places and move you to be better. Well, I miss my both family and friends.

Hmmmm…as I look into this picture again, I just recalled that I have a friend who loves the basic color used on the bus (and even the plane). What color is this again? Purple?

Friend/s, that’s what I should look for. I know it wont be easy in a foreign land with unfamiliar language and unusual customs. I feel like starting a new life. It scares me and at the same time excites me…well, my two months has only just begun.

Snacks / Meals on the plane

I was surprised again! I thought the snack was all that I am going to have, but I was mistaken. It was just an appetizer. It was some sort of a pork stew curry, rice, beans, a bread, butter and a salad which I cant figure what it was composed of. The salad was like minced pork with some vegetables mixed with it. It’s a bit spicy and a bit weird for my taste. Thanks to the can of beer I had, I appreciated the different mix and preparation of the food I had. The next picture was the food I had going to Phuket from Bangkok. It’s a mixture of salad with chicken…yes the potato shaped brown picture is a chicken. More tastes like a chicken empanada in the Philippines. The dessert wa a gelatin. A cup of water and juice is served and I had a coffee to wake myself up. To rate all the food I had that THAI AIRWAYS serves, I will give it a perfect 10…never had this kind of meal in a plane! Especially the “drink all you can” alcoholic beverages they offer. Something I never really had tried before…getting drunk in a plane. Maybe next time!!! Just for kicks!

Authentic Thai Beer

Above is the snack I had on Thai Airways. As compared with the local airlines we have in the Philippines, I was surprised to have options of what beverage to take; from regular juices to beers and wines. Well of course (as seen on the picture) I have chosen to taste their locally brewed beer SINGHA and having it mile high in an airplane has no difference…well, every first experience is exciting to talk about! Singha beer will do fine for now but I would prefer the taste of our home brewed San Miguel Pale Pilsen.

I would have taken 3 cans of beer if only I didn’t drink the night before. I still felt like dehydrated then. Yes I drink but I don’t consider myself as an alchohol addict. Its just that the pressure is still inside me…am embarking into I place I havnt been. I know the basics of their language but I think its not enough to help me around in starting a business in

Yup! That’s how my plane looked like from the outside. I really appreciated Mara for booking me along the aisle…I really hated fighting for the arm rest with an unknown person beside you. Fortunately for me, I don’t have anybody sitting at the other side, next to me. I loved my social space; gives me breathing room to ponder on things and think where I am now.

The flight in general was good in THAI Airways. I was expecting better looking stewardess though, Arden told me most of the THAIs are really sexy and gorgeous. I should have remembered of taking their pictures and show it to Arden…their selection was not the same as Philippine Airlines or maybe I was just hyped up too much on his story. They were all sexy, I agree, but old enough to be my auntie. Somehow they forget to smile more often. Maybe it was the last flight and they are already tired in putting up that smile.

Well, I have to be corrected as I get near to the end of my flight. I was unfortunately positioned inside the plane and there were 3 really good looking Thai stewardess inside. My bad Arden! I have to agree with your story…the Thais look really wonderful and pleasing to my eyes. Having a glance at them excites me…thinking that my whole 2 months in Thailand would be something interesting and breathtaking. I smiled to one and she gave me a decent and genuine smile back at me.

Well, I guess I have to always wear a smiling face. And hope it affects them and make them cheerful. Would you agree with me that a smile can be contagious? A smile can really bring your spirits high. Come to think of it, I felt good in having this tip.
